I've arrived in Jakarta! After a restful flight through Hong Kong, 32 new teachers, including me were greeted enthusiastically by JIS staff at the airport. Our weekender bags and ourselves were whisked away to a fabulous luxury hotel and our other bags were taken to our apartments or homes to await our arrival July 27. Today's orientation talked about culture shock and its remedy, mobile phones and of course, introductions. We not only have a new middle school principal, but also a new Head of School. Everyone was gracious, funny and kind. Most of them have been working here for over 10 years!! I'm looking forward to learning about why the expat life here is so alluring to so many. So far we have seen and have experienced the efficient and architecturally vibrant airport, a very luxurious luxury hotel, and a 6 course meal in the best Indonesian restaurant in Jakarta. So much more to come!!! Stay tuned.
Here is a side fact:JIS is the largest expat employer in Indonesia!

So good to hear from you! I've been wondering about your entrance into the very exotic Jakarta. I'll be interested in your first impressions of Jakarta.. The culture shock JIS spoke about... The sounds you rear, the fragrances, the pace you feel in the city... Do folks keep pets? how soon you will fall into a routine? Life in a big city will show a vast amount of differences from life in a small town like Henniker. But what else do you find new?. Can't wait to read all about your adventures. Xoxo. Heather
ReplyDeleteBrenda, This sounds so exciting. My expat friend in China attended a conference at Harvard with Howard Gardner. She shared the experiences with an expat teacher from JIS. the Indonesian teacher's first name was Liesel. JIS being the largest employer, you may never meet her but then again you may. This blog is a great idea. I, like Heather, am interested in the sounds, the smells and the complete ambiance of this faraway land. I'm sure that the culture can be shocking but I'm also sure that you are well insulated by your enthusiasm. Have you seen the church yet?
ReplyDeleteBrenda -- I'm so glad you've started blogging right from the beginning. I think your notes will be treasures as the year goes forward. I'm planning on reading every post and can't wait to keep abreast of your adventures and the wonders of teaching in such an amazing place.
